Marsh & McLennan Companies is a global professional services firm with two operating segments, risk and insurance services and consulting. It comprises four major companies, including Marsh, which offers insurance broking and risk management solutions; Guy Carpenter, which specializes in reinsurance and capital strategies; Mercer, which offers health, wealth and management consulting; and Oliver Wyman, which does branding and media consulting.[1][2]

Henry W. Marsh and Donald R. McLennan founded the company to help businesses during the upheaval of the Industrial Revolution some 140 years ago. Marsh began his business in Chicago after the Great Fire of 1871 wiped out most insurers. He saw opportunity for insurance brokers that could distribute great risks across firms. McLennan, of Duluth, Minnesota, became his family's sole support at age 14. McLennan approached his clients' business with diligence, researching their operations until he knew as much as the owners. When the two men merged firms in 1904, the new company was the largest insurance agency in the world with annual premiums of $3 billion.[3]
